Whether you realise it or not, the moment you open your mouth and start speaking, people use your language to judge how educated, competent and successful you are. Increasing your vocabulary is a sure way to sound more professional and successful.
When we have a large bank of words to draw on, we automatically improve our ability not only to express ourselves but also to think and to understand the world around us.
The English language has perhaps more than half a million words, yet most people have an active vocabulary of just a few thousand words. It is possible to get by with a limited number of words, but you expand your options as you expand your vocabulary. If you only understand a limited number of words, the amount of new information you can learn is also limited.
Here are five tips for increasing your vocabulary
1 When you hear or read a new word, write it down immediately on an index card.
2 Write an explanation of the new word on the same side in your own words.
3 Write the German translation on the other side of the card.
4 Think of some sentences you could use it in.
5 Use the new word actively in conversation.
