Your boss had to leave the office before signing a letter. Just type his or her name as usual, put ‘pp’ or ‘for’ in front of it and sign the letter yourself. The abbreviation ‘pp’ stands for the Latin ‘pro procurationem’ which means ‘instead of’. It does not have the same legal status as the German ‘ppa’, which you can only use if you are a ‘Prokuristin’. Both ‘pp’ and ‘for’ are used in UK-English, ‘for’ is used in US-English.
